Moving Careful - plus rarities (20th Anniversary Vinyl Edition)

February 16, 2018

Hardwood Records will release the second piece in its 20th Anniversary Vinyl Series with Hayden's Moving Careful on March 9, 2018 on digital and limited edition vinyl formats. This vinyl is the first pressing since the original 10" and features the original EP from 1996 with added rare recordings from 7" singles released between 1994 and 1996.

Subscribers to the Hardwood Records' newsletter will have the exclusive opportunity to pre-order this vinyl in advance of its release. Folks can sign up here.

"After touring my debut, Everything I Long For, across Canada for the better part of two years from 1994-96, I celebrated its imminent International release by developing a strong dislike for the sound of my music. A major sticking point in my negotiations with Outpost Recordings (my US label at the time) was to have the ability to release singles and EPs on my own or through smaller labels. They agreed, and Moving Careful was born from late night obsessions on the third floor of a rented Victorian house in Toronto. Although much of my debut was recorded on a 4-track cassette, I was eager to get back to my Yamaha MT100 II, and very inspired by what Eric's Trip and Lou Barlow were doing at the time."

Moving Careful was released on Hardwood/Sonic Unyon in late 1996. Side Two of this 20th Anniversary edition also includes home recordings from the time period, things that Hayden had tucked away and found homes on Canadian Indies like Lunamoth, Landspeed and Squirtgun.

Side One:
1. Pots and Pans
2. Stride
3. Middle of July
4. Old Fashioned Way
5. Half For Me
6. Choking
7. You are All I Have

Side Two:
8. A Fortune I'd Kept
9. Hazy
10. I Wake Up With Me
11. Mild
12. Winter Trip
13. Carry On Mentality
14. Wasting My Days Away

3rd Annual Dream Serenade

August 11, 2016

We're very excited to announce the third annual Dream Serenade benefit concert on October 22, 2016 at Toronto’s Massey Hall. Those of you who have generously supported us over the last couple of years know how special this night has become: artists like Feist, Matt and Aaron from The National, Bahamas, Serena Ryder, Barenaked Ladies, Billy Talent, Joel Plaskett and many others have generously volunteered their time and talents to perform intimate and inspiring performances on the stage of the legendary Massey Hall. Over $125,000 has been raised towards schools and services for children with developmental and / or physical disabilities, a new playground is underway for the students of Beverley Street School, a Family Relief Fund offering respite services is now active and last year we were able to award $20,000 to Toronto’s George Webster Elementary School for upgrades to their classrooms.

This annual concert is not just a way to contribute much needed funding to those that need it most within this community, but it’s an evening that celebrates the tireless work that teachers, parents and caregivers provide year round to children in our city, without the applause. This year, Broken Social Scene, Dan Mangan, Amy Millan (of Stars), Barenaked Ladies, The Persuasions, Lou Canon and more will help give us another unforgettable night. We hope you will join us.

Dream Serenade has become much more than its beginnings as a way to raise funds for our daughter's incredible school. It's now a very important part of our lives and a perfect way to celebrate a community of inspiring people.

— Hayden Desser & Christie Greyerbiehl (co-presenters)

Tickets for Dream Serenade ranging from $25-$100 can be purchased at the Massey Hall box office, by phone at 416-872-4255 or online at

Online donations to Dream Serenade are accepted year round at All donations will receive a charitable tax receipt.

Everything I Long For 20th Anniversary re-issue and tour

February 16, 2016

Around this time 20 years ago, I released my first full length record, Everything I Long For. It was a collection of 16 songs, some 4-track recordings that had previously appeared on two versions of a cassette called "In September", and a few new ones I recorded with my friend Joao Carvalho.

I've always had a bit of a complex relationship with this record, but with all of the personal baggage it comes with, I can't deny the impact it has had on my life and the meaning it had to a certain group of people in the mid 1990's.

For that, I've made the decision to briefly go back in time and celebrate the first songs I ever wrote with the release of a limited edition, double vinyl copy of Everything I Long For on April 1. The anniversary release is remastered from the original recordings and includes 5 never before heard demos and out-takes.

Pre-orders of the double-vinyl package, alongside other additional limited-edition merchandise recreated from the time, are now available through the Hardwood Records online shop.

There will be an Everything I Long For 20th Anniversary tour through Ontario starting on April 2, with performances of many EILF songs rarely, or never, played live before. Tickets for these shows are on sale this week with ticket details on the Tour page.

2nd Annual Dream Serenade - Third Artist Announcement

September 23, 2015

We're pleased to announce today that this year's Dream Serenade concert has the exciting additions of performances by Bahamas, Kevin Hearn & Thin Buckle and Choir! Choir! Choir!. They join the previously announced line up of Hayden, Joel Plaskett, The Weather Station and TUNS (Chris Murphy, Mike O'Neill and Matt Murphy).

2nd Annual Dream Serenade - Second Artist Announcement

September 13, 2015

You already know that Hayden and Joel Plaskett will be performing at this year’s annual Dream Serenade. This week, we add to the line up a new project from a group of Canadian Indie Scene powerhouses alongside one of the brightest and buzziest up and comers in the Scene this year: TUNS and The Weather Station.

The Weather Station is Tamara Linderman, whose intimate, elegant, understated yet intense folk music has won over critics and crowds: Hearing her 2015 album Loyalty, a collaboration with Bahamas, Pitchfork called her voice “unmistakable” and Rolling Stone used the words “rare beauty” to describe the music. TUNS is something of an East-Coast supergroup; the trio is comprised of members of three of Halifax’s most important rock and roll sons: Mike O’Neill (The Inbreds), Matt Murphy (Super Friendz) and Chris Murphy.

Dream Serenade is an annual concert organized by Toronto musician Hayden and his wife, Christie Greyerbiehl, that brings together a curated mix of musicians for unique performances to benefit special-needs children and their families. This year’s event at Massey Hall is on October 17, 2015. Line-up announcements roll out over the coming weeks, but in the meantime, check out Exclaim! Magazine’s 10/10 review of last year’s event, which raised over $100,000 for Beverley Street School and the creation of a Family Relief Fund, and this video from last year, when a few of the Dream Serenade gang – Sarah Harmer, The Barenaked Ladies, Lou Canon and Hayden – visited the Beverley Street School.

2nd Annual Dream Serenade announced for October 17

September 3, 2015

Dream Serenade 2015Dream Serenade will return to Massey Hall this year on October 17, 2015 for its second year supporting services for children with developmental disabilities and their caregivers. Last year's inaugural event featured performances from Feist, Matt Berninger and Aaron Dessner of The National, Barenaked Ladies, Billy Talent, Sarah Harmer, Jason Collett, Grey Lands (Wayne Petti), Lou Canon, and Hayden himself.

This year's event will continue in the tradition of unique collaborations and performances presented by Hayden and his wife Christie. Today, we announce the first wave of performers with Hayden and Joel Plaskett.

"Last year's Dream Serenade was such a remarkable event. It brought together the parents, families & caregivers of children with physical and / or developmental disabilities, their teachers and school staff and the broader community in celebration and awareness. With voices and sounds, we shook the walls of the legendary Massey Hall. No one left the building unmoved by the talent on stage, the images on screen, the generosity, and the spirit of the occasion.

Last year we raised over $100,000 with proceeds currently working towards the completion of a new green playground at Beverley St School with plans approved and groundbreaking this Spring! A respite fund for caregivers has also been established with applications available this September.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the 2nd annual Dream Serenade. This year's money raised will continue to benefit Toronto's Beverley Street School and the Family Relief Fund for caregivers, as well as an additional special needs school within the Toronto District School Board to be determined through an online video application process.

We hope you'll join us this Saturday, October 17th. Please stay posted as we announce more incredible artists who will be performing." -H & C

Tickets are on sale now through the Massey Hall website at or at the Massey Box Office by phone at 416-872-4255.

1st Annual Dream Serenade Benefit Concert

September 12, 2014

On October 25, the legendary Massey Hall will host the 1st Annual Dream Serenade, a concert presented and curated by Toronto songwriter, Hayden Desser and his wife Christie Greyerbiehl, in support of services for children with developmental disabilities. The inaugural event will feature intimate performances from Feist, Matt Berninger and Aaron Dessner of The National, Sarah Harmer, Kevin Hearn of Barenaked Ladies, Jason Collett, Grey Lands (Wayne Petti), Lou Canon, and Hayden himself.

Money raised through ticket sales and donations to this year’s event will benefit Toronto's Beverley Street School, as well as a family relief fund for caregivers. This exceptional school uses a team-based approach to support the educational needs of students who have a developmental and/or physical disability. Proceeds will be used to support furthering specialized technologies and equipment that are needed at the school on a daily basis. Funds will also be directed towards the building of a customized green playground for the children and their families.

Dream Serenade has been in the works for over five years, since the birth of Hayden and Christie's first child, who was born with a rare chromosome deletion causing developmental disabilities. "She's the most beautiful and inspiring person and yet our experience as parents has been among the most complex and challenging journeys we've ever known," admits Hayden. "We recognize that our experience as parents of a child with a developmental disability is not unlike the other families at Beverley. In those overwhelming and clouded first years, the comfort and support that can be provided to families from specialized services becomes paramount. Dream Serenade will aid both the children and their caregivers."

Ticket will be on sale Wednesday, September 17 at 10am.

You can purchase your own copy of the album in digital, vinyl or CD format on Arts & Crafts' Gallery website along with additional merchandise and tickets for Hayden’s upcoming tour.

The album is also available on iTunes, where you’ll find Hayden’s earlier releases on sale. If you’re in the US, you can purchase the new album here.
